FLUME’S BAND Pick Of The Week!
S.C.U.M
Despite endless magazines and reviews have called them¨Little Horrors¨. a diminutive comparison to one of the biggest bands of the moment The Horrors, not only because bassist Huw Webb is the younger brother of the Horrors’ Rhys Webb, but also because the bands share traits on the musical and magazine-ready haircuts-and-cheekbones levels. It would be easy to denigrate that specific ¨thing¨ about this band but the fact is that they are a great band. A band that really translates live, creating a sound and presence that is absolutely theirs.
Having toured Europe for a number of years, buoyed by a nod from Portishead, and working with the great alternative producers Ken and Joylon Thomas (David Bowie, P.I.L. Psychic TV. amongst others) gives the S.C.U.M. the tangible confidence to be great. And one of those bands you should watch out for.

PHONE JOAN - Damned (2011)
The 1st single from Phone Joan’s sophomore release, “Damned” was given a fantastically sad video by some young Norwegian filmmakers. It perfectly follows the bluesy sadness of the song as we follow a beautiful young girl, post one-night stand wake up, who ventures around the city ending back in a club. Rinse and repeat.
+47 91799466 will be out on March 14th. You can stream the song on the band’s Soundcloud if you like. This is currently our only taste of Phone Joan but they have a sound much bigger than we expected and we are anxious to hear what else they have up their sleeves.

EMILY HAINES (Metric)
Anyone else love Emily Haines of the band Metric? Well not only Metric but she also flies solo with The Soft Skeletons and is a also a part time member of the super group Broken Social Scene.
This woman is powerful. Mesmerizing on stage, she is always completely comfortable in her style and yet rocking as hard as any. She seems to prefer little dresses in black or white or with very interesting details (not to mention her amazing shoes and boots)…but she also looks fantastic in jeans and tees. Respect?
Emily says There’s a place called ¨LAB consignment¨ in Toronto, Canada where half her wardrobe is for sale—along with the rest of the neighborhood indie rockers. If you live in Toronto you shouldnt miss out on the chance of owning some of her clothes.

BEING HUMAN (US)
“Being Human US” (now on it’s 2nd season) works better than it should because of it’s skillful writing, often laced with wry humor, and the very deep well of plot possibilities in the idea that three “Monsters” as they call themselves, can pass for “Humans”. Aidan (the vampire) and Josh (the werewolf) may try to resist, but every once in a while, they just have to give in to their infernal urges, while Sally (the ghost) tries to come to grips why she is still stuck in the living world. The actors are attractive and the performances winning, what will make you coming back to “Being Human” every week is the thematic base of wanting to fit in with a world that can’t begin to understand you. This is hardly a new idea in either the sci-fi or horror genre (and “Being Human” is a bit of both), but it’s the mortar that holds the other two winning elements together and becomes what we call a.. ¨guilty pleasure¨ and a very good one in our opinion.

FLUME’S PHOTOGRAPHER Pick Of The Week!
LEE JEFFERIS
Lee Jeffries lives in Manchester, United Kingdom. Close to the professional football circle, Lee began his career photographing sporting events. But a chance meeting with a young homeless girl in the streets of London changed his artistic approach forever. Lee Jeffries recalls that, initially, he had stolen a photo from this young homeless girl huddled in a sleeping bag. The photographer knew that the young girl had noticed him but his first reaction was to leave. He says that something made him stay and go and talk with the homeless girl. His perception about the homeless completely changed. They become the subject of his art. The models in his photographs are homeless people that he has met in Europe and in the United States: he says ¨Situations arose, and I made an effort to learn to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to do their portrait¨ From then onwards, his photographs portray his convictions and his compassion to the world.
His portrait work is incredible and FLUME is recommending this!

50/50 (2011)
Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis in this new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Will Reiser. 50/50 is the story of a guy’s transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health - drawing its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminding us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

THE BLACK BELLES
Ruby Rogers (bass), Shelby Lynne (drums), Lil’ Boo (synth), and Olivia Jean (vocals, guitar, organ) are even a little too perfect. (“Kicked out of Girl Scouts for poisoning cookies. Allegedly.”)
Despite the controversial ¨Gothic¨ looks, The Black Belles deliver. They play compulsively listenable ’60s garage rock draped in black lace and a sneer. The band’s songs are a creepy collection of power chord-based riffs, with warbley witches’ vocals floating on top. The lyrics of almost every song seem a bit wicked, with tales of revenge in songs like “Honky Tonk Horror”. It’s very apparent that Jack White produced this album, because the songs feature instrumentation and mixing very similar to much of his work. Most of it is in his more minimalist style, although there are a few moments when there’s just a cacophony of all-out energetic noise that shows the band isn’t afraid to go wild.
A must for everyone who loves whatever Jack White touches. You can definitely hear his influence on the album. But in Flume’s Opinion, that is a very good thing.
FLUME really loves their Self Tittled Debut Album and Recommends it!

THE KILLS - The Last Goodbye
An old-school photo booth inspired the set for Samantha Morton’s debut music video, celebrating The Kills’ 10th anniversary single “The Last Goodbye”. Morton, who completed her directorial first feature The Unloved last year, has been a fan of the duo for years. After being sent a live performance of the track, Morton said.. “The track felt incredibly nostalgic; the same way I feel about the machines.” Unbeknown to Morton, the photo booth is central to band members Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince’s ten-year partnership: the pair seek out the devices when on tour to record their travels. But Morton managed to renew the experience: “Samantha has this crazy way of inviting you into a fantasy world where you don’t feel stupid or awkward,” he says. “She had dramatic classical music that she’d play instead of our track. It made you perform completely differently. There’s a beauty and magic in it that I could never have imagined.” Morton revealed her nostalgia for photo booths and love of monochrome in an amazing way with this video.

CLEMENTINE POESY
French women are known in terms of beauty and amazing aura. It is not surprising that when Flume saw the pictures of Clemence Poesy some time ago we were blown away completely. And we just had to mention her on this blog.
We discovered the actress before her role in “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” fame, she can always be seen crossing the courtyard of Paris fashion shows. She doesnt only portraits beauty but she has also got the talent though and DEFINITELY fashion sense.

RIZZOLI AND ISLES
If the rest of the seasons are going to be anything compared to the last two, We know that you can look forward to many more seasons to come for this engaging yet hilarious crime show. Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) is believable as the tough girl who honors the law (yet is able to maintain her incredible sexiness at the same time.) And Isles (Sasha Alexander) is the fashionista who crazily enough loves her often disgusting job as the medical examiner. (She also brings a lot of the subtle humor with her character’s attitude and wisdom). It’s so fun to watch their relationship develope. They keep the show full with excitment, enough to keep your attention throughout entire episodes. It’s an incredible well written show. Who would’ve thought humor and crime would go so well together? We are staying tuned for season 3.

AITOR ORTIZ
The Spanish photographer Aitor Ortiz has photographed several monumental structures, from Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, his hometown, to the Millau Viaduct in southern France, to a black marble quarry in the town of Markina in northern Spain. However, Ortiz’ works cannot be categorized as exclusively architectural or documentary. He is, quite simply, an artist who appropriates architectonic forms to create works of art. John Szarkowski in his introduction to The Photographer’s Eye states, “An artist is a man who seeks new structures in which to order and simplify his sense of the reality of life.” This is precisely what Ortiz has accomplished.
More of his work and exhibitions can be found at Aitor’s Official Website
FLUME recommends Aitor’s work for those who love Abstract Photography.
FLUME’S MOVIE Pick Of The Week!
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011)
David Fincher’s version feels just as Swedish as the original and does not shy away from rape, violence, sex and questionable morals. While some shots seem to be taken one to one from the Swedish original, the film still has plenty of Fincher’s signature trademarks: there is an outstandingly cool opening sequence, unusual camera angles and a pretty gloomy atmosphere. There was a lot of praise for the acting in the Swedish film but Rooney Mara pulls off the unexpected: she is en par with Noomi Rapace, playing an intense Lisbeth, this vulnerable, dangerous, disturbed, fascinating person. The rest of the cast is just as excellent here. The plot of the murder hunt is disturbing, exciting and engaging, especially if you know little about the novel or first film. People who know the original well may find few reasons to check this out, but the fact remains that there are some minor yet significant changes and this version feels firmer, slimmer and overall more enthralling. You can’t accuse the film of getting watered down or Americanized. Only Fincher could pull that off.
And let’s not leave out the fact that the whole soundtrack for the movie was made by the awesome Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It’s available on Spotify. FLUME Recommends This!

FLUME’S BAND Pick Of The Week!
PROMISE AND THE MONSTER
Promise And The Monster is actually a young girl named Billie Lindahl from Uppsala, Sweden. “Red tide” is the name of Promise And The Monster’s new album. There is definitely something DavidLynchy in those sounds. Compared to her debut Transparent Knives (which was released in 2007) not much has actually changed: same voice, same dark atmosphere. Just like in her debut, Billie’s music is more cinematic than anything you had listened recently. Billie is definitely a mystery. You can write words such as “darkness”, “sweetness”, “shyness” or even “beauty”, you will not manage to define it. I mean, call us crazy, but we pretend this is some music to obviously listen to, but also to picture and nearly, with a bit of imagination, to touch. Each song is untitled with one single word, often a first name. Those ghosts are gonna deal with all of your senses. But make no mistake: Focus on the music. The album deserves it. It is one of the best Flume has heard last year.
